stinky goodness

Mama says she is considering changing us back to our old food from the grain free.  We used to clean our stinky goodness bowls and now we don't.  Because Kit needs to gain weight, she is considering whether it is more important to have food that he will eat more of versus food that is healthier.  The other side of the story is that Kit's vomiting has gotten SO much better since switching to the grain free.  He has already gained some weight with his medicine and the new food.  She is not sure what to do.  I don't know what to tell her.  I am used to the new food and don't efun remember what the old food tasted like.  I actually need to lose weight.  She doesn't know what is best for both of us.  She needs to talk to the v-e-t.

Food is always a complicated issue and it becomes many times more complicated when one has more than a single cat. We tend to get a pretty wide variety of different foods because #1 thinks it is good that our stomachs are use to a variety of foods.

We are going through a time with Hannah at the moment where she will only eat dry food which is a pain because Lucy will only eat wet - mum is hoping one of them will change but she's not holding her breath!

Yes, I would get a vet opinion too...without going there of course! I would tend to stay with the grain free if the vomiting has stopped.

We're with Brian. Grains are so highly allergenic that perhaps there was an allergy which means it wouldn't help to go back to a diet with grain in it. Also, if you do that, try and stay away from gluten as that's the worst (and they are finding more and more issues with gluten for humans which as omnivores we should be able to tolerate but can't--as true carnivores cats are even less likely to tolerate it)

If only you could find a healthy, grain-free food that you both enjoyed. We are crazy about most of the flavors of Weruva, especially Marbela Paella and Mack 'n Jack. But we do only get fish flavors 1-2 times a week because my Mommeh doesn't think it is good to have fish too often.

Cody is on grain free food and has been since last summer. He licks his plate totally clean and scarfs it down within seconds!!

He eats Royal Canin Rabbit and Green Pea (he eats both the canned and the dry) Why don't you give it a try? It is MUCH healthier!

Also, did you do a gradual change-over instead of abruptly changing to the new food?

We're on the grain free train. We switched over a couple of years ago, though Toby goes through yakking phases.

I dunno, it sounds good to me - if Kit is gaining weight and you need to lose some and aren't eating so much, is it really that important that you're not cleaning your plates? And these days there are so many different brands of grain-free cat food that there has to be SOME that you like! Even picky me likes one, the EVO canned food.

well, fur whut it's worth, our vettie sez that the grain free stuff is usually more nutrient-dense than the stuff wif grain as fillers (as well as bein' less allergenic), so maybe you're stoppin' eatin' when your bellehs are full. maybe it just don't take as much to be satisfied?

if there is an authority to your dilemma it would be the vet, but i'm sure you'd love any food your mama will give you.

Oh dear Athena
We know it is tough.
Well guess what? Consumer Reports in teh August 2011 issue just did an article on Pets and they talked about food, you may want to read that. Mom says she likes CR because they are impartial. But definitely check with your vet he will know what the best course of action is! WE hope you find some foods you both love.

I think it's a fine idea for your Mom to CALL up the vet and talk or even GO there BY HERSELF to discuss it. No PTUs involved, of course, MOL!

The no yakking route! Difficult for efurrybody to get what they need in multiple kitteh households. Visit with the V-E-T. Purrs.

We know you'll get lots of ideas, but we just think your vet should have the last word. Both of you should be healthy, happy and yak-free! We hope you find something soon that works for you 2...

Athena, we hope your v-e-t can give your mom some answers. One thing to consider is that the grain free you are eating now proly has more calories in it so you might not need to eat as much compared to your old food. Last year our mom was worried about Pip not eating much but she still gained weight within vet visits a couple of months apart. Our vet said that meant Pip was getting enough calories even if she didn't seem to be eating much. Sorry about the ramble.... purrs,

We think your mom should talk with your vet, but if Kit's vomiting is better on grain free, we would stick with that.

Athena if you do not have to go to the v-e-t in furson then asking them about the change in food is a good idea. When I had a problem with my food the V-E-T made a suggestion to the type of food I should eat and helping to find a food that agreed with me.
